'Thanksgiving' was celebrated for the first time in 1621. However from 1621 to 1863, this day was not celebrated.

It wasn't untill June of 1676 that another Thanksgiving was proclaimed.

George Washinton proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789. And later, President Thomas Jefferson opposed this idea.

Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, wrote in lots of newspapers and letters to governors and presidents in order to recognize the celebration of Thanksgiving.

So, Thanksgiving was officially proclaimed by President Lincoln in 1863, to be celebrated the last Thursday in November.

In 1941,Thanksgiving was declared a legal holiday by the United States Congress, with Roosevelt as President. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.
